Chicago Blues show featuring the cool Hammond Organ Sound from Chicago!
Ray
Vanderby is a veteran of the Australian music scene having performed
and recorded for over 40 years. The son of a coal miner, Ray was born
in Sittard, Limburg, the deep south coal mining region of The
Netherlands in 1953. After migrating with his family to Orange NSW he
started playing and fell in love with the Hammond Organ sound.
At
age 12 in 1965, Ray became the youngest semi-professional organist in
Australia, playing in dance halls, clubs and he scored a 4-year
residency at the Hotel Canobolas.
In 1973 Ray based
himself in Sydney and went on to record and perform with some of
Australia’s top artists for many years such as Marcia Hines, Denni
Hines, Cameron Daddo, John English, Stevie Wright, Blackfeather, John
Paul Young and Doug Parkinson.
He supported international stars such as Osibisa at the Capitol Theatre Sydney and Joe *****er at Melbourne’s Myer Music Bowl.
Ray has also appeared on the Midday show, MTV and Countdown Revolution.
But
it wasn’t always an easy life for Ray as he was drawn to the musician’s
party lifestyle, not uncommon in the 1970’s. After 20 years of
alcoholism, drug addiction, 3 marriages, loosing all his possessions
and becoming homeless, he finally dried out in 1987 after almost
loosing his life. He began recording and performing again and in 1991
Ray won the W.R.O.C./BMG National Song Writing Competition out of 2,500
entries from around the country.
Ray Vanderby and The
Raynettes is based in Melbourne and Ray’s 3rd album "Married to the
Blues" is a representation of his live Chicago style blues show. The
album is released through Australia’s leading Blues and Roots label
Black Market Music and filled with popular Delta, Mississippi, Texas,
and Chicago style dance songs. With his gravelly beat-poet style
vocals, gritty soulful Hammond organ playing, and Chicago style shuffle
grooves, Ray executes his unique versions of popular classics. The live
show is packed with dancing music, audience participation, humour and
story telling. Your toes will tap, your hips will shake, you’ll laugh
and you won’t be able to sit - it is a true celebration of one man's
relationship with Blues music, the artistic constant of his life.
With the help of all (3 girl) vocal backup group The Raynettes, renowned musicians Ronnie Tabuteau on guitar and Dean Matters on
drums, Ray Vanderby and The Raynettes is a 6 piece show that delivers a
very entertaining performance. Hear it for yourself on the CD!
