There's so much talk about Jethro Tull around here and as much as I've come to appreciate them (thanks to ProgRocks basically forcing mp3s down my throat Cool), I still think Rush are better. But don't take my word for it, what do YOU think?

I like Rush WAY more but I really can't see them as a prog band, despite that being the generally percieved category for them. To me they're just a rock band that **** with time signatures.

That sounds pretty prog to me man, but I see your point

Rush are a great band, but you just can't pick them ahead of tull.

Rush didn't release a strong album until Hemispheres in 1978. I don't consider 2112 a great album, but it's fairly solid. All Rush albums before 2112 are good at best, but they are only worth 7/10. Rush became themselves in 1978. Before that they still had that zeppelin/sabbath shell. I think Farewell to kings suffers from having several good songs, but none of them really blow me away, while the recording is not the best. Geddy started to sing best in 1978

Before I even mention Tulls first great era. I will compare Tulls 2nd great era with Rushs great era

1977-tulls songs from the wood remaster(with an extra groovy prog song) definately has the edge over farewell to kings. Farewell to kings has a trashy feel to it. Tull wins
1978-as great as hemispheres is, I rate the heavy horses remaster(with a couple of nice extra tracks) just as good, while tull had a couple more extra proggy songs from 1978 which I believe are both on the 20 year box set. Boths bands produced some great prog rock this year. But Hemispheres only last 35 mimutes, while Tull have about an hour worth of music. Tull just wins
1979-tulls stormwatch remaster is a fine cd with 4 wonderful extra songs(an hour worth of heavy folk rock with a touch of prog) , rush didn't release an album. Tull wins
1980-rushs permanent waves is quite a strong rock album, but tulls A album is more adventurous and more of a prog release. Tulls A has more excellent songs, but Permanent waves is more consisten. I call it a draw
1981-Rush released the very good Moving pictures, while tull released nothing apart from a few rough sounding rock songs that appeared on Nightcap in 1993. Rush win
1982-Rush release Signals which is excellent. Tull's Broadsword remaster has 18 songs and has double the strong songs that the original album had. I also believe there are a couple of 1982 songs on the 20 year box set. If you compiled Tulls best 10 songs from 1982, you would come up with a great album equal with Rush's signals. I'll give Rush the edge because they recorded less songs for the same result. Rush just wins

Tull seem to have the edge from this era although this is Rushs greatest period of their career. Pre 1978 Tull wins hands down absolutely, Post 1990 Tull also wins quite comfortably. Rush are a great band, but Tull are greater. Bursting out is a greater live album than Exit stage left also.

I think Camel are probably 2nd to tull when you look at bands careers. Rush are one the best still
