Hello folks, Soundfossil are expanding our live lineup & looking for a percussionist.
We are shooting for decadent fin-de-siecle apocalypse muzak, dramatic dirges & ballroom bangers, like some titanic foyer ensemble or speakeasy house-band for the new 20’s. As in, kind-of depressing, but shake your ass and we might give you an olive.
It’s pretty grounded in folk/rock/alternative (think leonard cohen, nina simone, pj harvey, the drones), with some continental flavors sneaking in from eastern european folk, 60’s french pop, oppressive catholic organ music, sea shanties, film scores & fairground organs. Also influenced by post-rock, post-punk, early jazz, experimental/industrial & avant-garde, & downbeat slowcore neofolk eg. smog, sun kil moon, marissa nadler. Not to be too prescriptive though, happy to see where it goes.
There is loads of existing material to choose from. The idea is to make new arrangements as a band, to find a voice that suits the new ensemble, allow space for our different styles to join together into a new thing.
I’d like to get away from over-arranging through too many overdubs, which I’ve been doing worse than ever in lockdown, & settle on a more natural & organic ‘band’ vibe, but still serving the intention of the songs. For that reason all the tracks currently public are not very indicative of the band sound - they are mostly-solo home-recordings so you’ll have to blur your ears & use your imagination. Can send more stuff if you're interested.
So far we are two guitarists, one bassoonist, & clarinet/bass clarinet, with gongs and possibility to switch clarinet for cello. Looking to add a pump-organist soon also. Would be open to adding accordion, strings, glockenspiel/vibes or whatever else down the track maybe.
But right now we’re looking for a percussionist/drummer who’s interested in texture as well as rhythm, who knows when to hold back & most of all is into the material & in it for the hot meals & the good vibes.
Nothing crazy ambitious, just working towards some gigs, recording something together, making a video or two. We rehearse at mine in Ascot Vale but if we outgrow that we can move to my Footscray workshop.
Love to hear from you,
Nick & Soundfossil.
