Feel free to contribute to this list of essentials:-

1) Turn up (on time)
2) Tune up (before you hit the stage)
3) Remove the clip-on tuner from the headstock (don't be a lazy sod)
4) Don't wear a watch [or any other extraneous pedestrian stuff, for that matter] on stage (unless you really, really need to or it's part of the show)

These are some of my personal gripes, I am a grumpy old man.

Absolutely, there is no need at all to wear boring, distracting, ordinary stuff when you're performing an act of entertainment.

It detracts from everything you should be doing on stage and makes a performer, whatever genre, look mundane and not making an effort.

I want to see someone trying to put across something beyond the pale.

Why WOULD you wear a watch, to make sure you don't overrun your timeslot? Maybe, but that's a poor reason.

This is, of course, a personal opinion, as is the clip-on tuner Smile

I leave my clip on tuner on the guitar, but i check my tuning every other song.

heres some rules then (mainly cover band related)

- check your tuning (a lot) , don't make me solo over an out of tune bass
- don't all turn around to look at the person that messed up, 9 times out of 10 thats the only reason the audience is aware of the mistake.
-learn the songs (and avoid rehearsal)
-learn how to recognise a key. Ie just because it starts on a certain chord it does not mean it is in that key. How many times have you been told Sweet Home Alabama is in D....
- Don't Fart and make your band members have to suffer on stage
-stick to the setlist, and if you decide to change it let everyone know.
-let people know the song name and artist. I remember one gig and the singer called "Fire" by Springsteen. half the band thought "I'm on fire" and the others thought "fire" both written by Springsteen. Embarrassing in front of a large crowd as we started the song/s
-If you have a Tamborine, don't pass it out to people with no rhythmic ability and never use it if there is a click track playing that the tambourine player isn't hearing.
-don't play horses or jessie's girl, we have all had enough

When you start looking it turns out everyone is wearing a watch. Even Keith Richards.
