I recently shadowed a sound engineer to gain valuable first hand knowledge. However, his set up confuses me.

His signal chain is Band - Microphones - Desk - Master Desk - Limiter - Power Amplifiers - Speakers

Can anyone shed some light on what the master desk is designed for? He lethargically explained to me, giving me the idea that he didn't know what he was talking about either.

Cheers guys!

The master mixer is an FSM-600, where the main mixing console is a Digital SE Expression.

I dont think it would use pro-tools as its used in live production.

I wasn't familiar with either mixer, so I had a quick look at the specs.
The SE Expression is that thishttp://www.soundcraft.com/products/si-expression-1 soundcraft number?

Both offer mic pre-amps, both have EQ - the FSM-600 looks limited in this department.

From a functional perspective I can see no benefit of running one mixer into the other.

In the signal chain you mentioned below, there's no PC or recorder... so maybe the Expression unit I've IDd above is incorrect and the 'Master desk' is a recorder?
