Same as buying a song on iTunes. You get the file, weather it be PDF, MP3, whatever and then you can do with it what you will.
Pay less for an online copy thats more convient then print it our if you want to hold it in your hand. _________________ www.lieandwait.com.au |

people need to pay for music for one f*cking reason: because you yourself wouldn't be too happy if people started stealing what cost you potentially thousands of dollars to produce, causing the implosion of the music industry, taking with it recorded material to purchase, venues to perform, bands to see. _________________ www.robertburchett.com

Which is not to say that giving things away intentionally for free is a bad thing, either.
It's just stealing that is bad. _________________ Available as composer, arranger and bass player.

I like what Wasp had to say on this topic. And I like the fact that technology has belly-flopped on top of itself the way it has. There was a time when musicians made their money by performing. Recording an album and living off the royalties was a phenomenon that had its place in time, but is now starting to fade it seems.
How is this not a GOOD thing? There will always be people who care enough about their music to work at it for a greater reason than to get rich. People in it for the money always have the option of getting a real job. I do understand the point made by the person in the article, who makes most of his money from sheet music and not performance. But again, if it's money you want you can go get a real job. Most musicians don't live off their earnings as a musician after all.
Anyway, doesn't theft require there to be a loss of material wealth from the victim? You can't claim loss of income either, because a lot of people who download music illegally wouldn't have paid for it in the first place. Same goes for sheet music. |

Real job?
Being a full time muso isn't reality? Those who are, are just dreaming?
My dad then hasn't had a real job in over 35 years.
And there must have been a time when I didn't have one for 7-8 years.
This type of thinking around 'Full time muso = not real job' bothers me greatly to put it mildly and is a contributing factor in the issues raised in this thread. _________________ Bow to your sensei!

Maybe I'm a little too attached to the starving artist paradigm, but I think it does a service to art when money is taken out of the picture either as a motivator or entirely.

Maybe on a philosophical level, but that the fact is - you can make a living from the arts if you are entrepreneurial (which humans are also allowed to be).
I think the 'purist' artist you speak of is actually in some ways the 'lazy' artist. Money is not the root of all evil!
Until we're living The Venus Project, I'll happily spend my days and nights playing and teaching music for money. _________________

to be honest, I wouldnt mind people downloading my bands EP for nothing, on the condition that a lot of people got to hear it.
Sure it means less financial return, but more listeners = more people at shows. _________________ http://www.myspace.com/amirala |
